President Barack Obama appealed for calm Monday as officials confirmed 40 mild cases of deadly swine flu across the United States and warned against tourist travel to neighboring Mexico.

Europe stepped up its response to the outbreak of swine flu, after its first case was confirmed on Monday in Spain. The EU has called an emergency huddle of health ministers to discuss the threat of the virus, while the health commissioner advised against non-essential travel to flu-affected areas, without naming Mexico and the United States. Tour groups have started cancelling trips to Mexico, while Russia began airport checks, Poland tightened border controls and Bulgaria ordered checks on meat imports from outside the EU to try to hold the disease at bay.
